Chapter 1 - Wedding Bells

2015 “Here comes Mr. and Mrs. King!” Someone in the crowd announced, ecstatically. Jenay Lambert walked out of the towns’ church hall, hopping down the stairs wearing a bright orange dress. Her platinum blonde hair bounced around her shoulders as she descended. Walking beside her was her sister, Lacey and their new step-brother, Noel King. Following behind them was their mother, Elise and her newly wedded husband Peter King. Everyone was thrilled to see the newly married couple, except for Jenay. Feeling bored, she left Lacey with Noel for her to connect with him. A year ago, when her mother started dating Peter, Lacey was jubilant. She got along with Peter and his son, Noel, who was a charming college boy studying at Greyson University of Art and Literature. “Come on, it’s time for the family picture. Jen, Lace, Noel darling come on we have to click at least one photo together.” Elise called out. “Peter, will you please stop texting? It is our wedding day and I know you are a busy man but please not today!” She glared mockingly at her new husband while he smiled back at her. Elise turned towards the children. “Noel, stand next to your father but a step-down, will you? Thank you. And you my princess Lacey, will you stand beside your brother and Jen, please look more interested and stand next to your sister and smile?” “Sure, why not! But why do you even bother asking? As if you had asked us before marrying another man?” Jen commented as she rolled her eyes at Elise. “Jen, behave yourself. You are talking to your mother, not to your friends. Now just smile for the picture.” Elise said. It could be heard from Elise’s voice that she was hurt by Jen’s comment but she didn’t let it show. After the photo shoot of the family, the couple descended the steps towards their rented 1953 white Buick Skylark. A Dodge Viper RT10 speeded towards the church. Two girls who walked out of the car. One was a short, blonde-haired girl that had red and pink streaks while the other girl had an average height with long dark brown hair. They jogged towards Jen, who stood at the bottom of the stairs. “Grace, Shay! Come up here!” Jen exclaimed. “How did it take you so long to come here from Rose Avenue? I’m bored and I can’t stand looking at mom with that man. I don’t know what she saw in him?” Jen huffed in frustration. “I guess good looks, money and that amazing British accent?” Grace replied, dreamingly. Jen had a very confused look cast on her face. Grace shrugged as she blew bubbles out of her gum, straightening her white strapless chiffon rosette dress. “Sorry that we couldn’t make it to the ceremony. Wes was acting like a jerk and was not letting me borrow the car.” Shay complained as she flipped her brown hair back. She wore a sleeveless temple plaid wrap v neck sundress with sunglasses. “Ah! It is alright. Let’s just go. It’s getting awkward out here.” Jen said as she saw Lacey talking to Noel. She walked over to her little sister and whispered, “Lace, could you catch the ride back home with Noel? I am going with the girls. Sorry.” Jen asked her little sister apologetically. “It’s all right. I was about to say the same. Noel is taking me out for an ice cream.” Lacey beamed. Jen exhaled harshly. “All right, see you at home, Lace. Tell mom I will be staying at Grace’s tonight. I will be home early in the morning.” She said. Lacey nodded before rushing hurriedly backward to Noel. Jen looked up at the church and sighed. The last time she was at the church, it was for her father’s funeral. Pierre Lambert had died in a car accident four summers ago when she was thirteen years old and Lacey was just six. She turned around and joined her friends. The three girls hen speeded towards their favorite coffee shop, Gemma’s in Shay’s car. Stepping into the shop, they seated themselves at the regular booth. Having their regular drink, a Caramel Macchiato, an Espresso and a hot chocolate. Later, Shay dropped Grace and Jen at the Reynolds Mansion. The girls headed towards Grace’s room. “So what do you want to do?” Grace asked. Jen exhaled loudly. “Change out of this horrid looking dress maybe?” Grace chuckling walked towards her closet. She picked out a white camisole and hot pink pajamas and tossed it over to Jen. “Here you go! Be free from that fashion disaster.” By the time Jen had freshened up and changed out of her clothes, Grace had situated herself in front of her computer. “What are you looking at?” Jen asked. She pulled herself a chair and sat beside Grace. “New movies that we could watch on Netflix. Do you want to do a horror movies marathon? Like the old times?” Grace asked enthusiastically wagging her eyebrows. Jen and Grace were huge horror movie fanatics. They would watch all kinds of horror movies. From gory, bloody movies to not-anymore-scary, haunting movies. And Shay was the typical girl next door. She would watch romantic comedies and fawn over the possibilities of love. But there was one genre all three girls would love to watch, action movies! Superheroes, terrorist attacks or just plain old spy movies, they could love to binge watch them all. After Jen and Grace had an Insidious movies marathon, they went to bed scared to their bones. It was a quarter to three when Jen woke up in a jolt. She couldn’t decipher what she had dreamed about. In her dream, she saw flashes of a lake. In the middle of the lake stood a girl with a pale face, pale white hair and ice cold eyes. She wore a fiery orange dress that seemed to have slits on the sides and brown leather pants. In her hand, she carried a sword that illuminated the blue and green light. In front of the girl, on the shore, were piles of bodies heaped together. A river of blood gushing out of them. The moon was high up in the sky and the air seemed dry. Jen quickly picked up the bottle of water and gulped it down in one big sip. Grace felt Jen shiver and wake up as she opened her eyes grudgingly. “Hey, are you alright?” Grace asked in a hoarse voice. Jen nodded. “Yes, I am fine. Just a bad dream.” Grace now fully alert switched on the bedside lamp. “You want to talk about it?” She asked with concern. Jen took a deep breath. “Nah! I must have terrified myself tonight a lot more than expected. I think it was because of the movie.” She said sheepishly. “So, are you saying that you had an out of body experience? Did you see ghosts? Are they here? Hello?” Grace rambled into thin air. Jen chuckling patted Grace on her leg. “No, I didn’t suffer from an out of body experience. And I don’t think there are any ghosts here. If they were, they would have already fled after your terrible singing talent.” Jen laughed. Grace gasped and swatted Jen’s hand off her leg. “Hey! I am not that bad! So what if I sound like a goat. I am pretty sure there are goats that sing very well in his or her community.” She said. Jen still laughing, said. “Sure. Till we find your ‘goat’ community, let’s just stick to no singing policy. I would love to have my ears till I am sixty.” Grace grumbled under her breath before she said, “Whatever. I am going back to sleep.” She switched off the light and fell asleep almost immediately. Jen, who couldn’t get sleep, stayed up till exhaustion took over.
